Shining a Light on Suicide Prevention in EMS—A Critical Conversation for September

September is designated National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month
September is designated National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month

September marks National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, a time to spotlight conversations that can save lives. At the Louisiana Rural Ambulance Alliance, we know firsthand the unique challenges faced by EMS professionals. Every day, these brave individuals serve our communities under immense pressure, often witnessing traumatic events that most people never encounter.

Statistics show that EMS professionals are at a higher risk of suicide compared to the general population. (Vigil et al., 2019) The nature of their work—long shifts, emotional stress, and frequent exposure to critical incidents—takes a toll on mental health. (Bentley et al., 2013) Yet, stigma and fear of professional consequences often keep EMS workers from reaching out for help. ("Mental Health and Help-Seeking Among Trauma-Exposed Emergency Service Staff: A Qualitative Evidence Synthesis", 2023)

This month, we encourage the EMS community and the public to speak openly about mental health. Please help foster supportive environments where these conversations can take place. If you or someone you know is struggling, support is available. Reaching out is a sign of strength.

Join us in raising awareness, supporting one another, and advocating for mental health in EMS. Together, we can make a difference—this September and beyond.
